One self-contained file that opens in any browser — transcript, timestamps and speakers. No link, no server, nothing to expire.
How PressCam handles speech
Voice meter — always on, costs nothing. The bars show the mic is hearing people.
After each take — “Transcribe this take” gives the accurate transcript. Always available, no setup.
Live captions (optional) — words on screen as people speak. Needs a one-time model download and keeps the phone working while it listens.
Nothing downloads unless you choose to enable them. You can change this any time in Settings.
Capture
Tap the preview to focus/expose there (on cameras that support it). A zoom slider appears when the camera supports zoom.
Sourcing
Opt-in: adds rounded coordinates (e.g. 40.71N-74.01W) to photo/take/transcript names for sourcing and verification. Location is read at capture time and never leaves the device except in the file name.
On-device models
Models download once on first use and then work offline. Voice labeling uses a separate ~100 MB model.
Device speech
Live captions and finished-take transcripts use your device's built-in speech recognition — fast, on-device, and no large model downloads.
Vocabulary
Names, companies and jargon the recogniser keeps getting wrong. One per line. Corrections are applied to every transcript on this device.
For this story only
Security
A wipe removes every record and file the app holds, and then checks that nothing is left. It cannot promise the phone’s storage chip has overwritten the old bytes — no app can.
Backup
One encrypted file holding every take, transcript and photo. Save it wherever you like — Files, iCloud, Drive, Dropbox, your own server. The passphrase stays with you; there is no key for us to hold and none for us to lose.
Restoring adds takes that are missing and leaves the ones already here untouched, so it is safe to run twice.
Cloud upload (Nextcloud / WebDAV)
One-tap Upload in the take modal pushes the recording plus its transcript. Use a dedicated app password, not your main password — it is stored only in this browser. For iCloud Drive / Google Drive, use the Share button (native share sheet) instead.
Checking the chain…
Every entry commits to the one before it. Editing or removing any entry breaks every hash after it, and this check reports where.
What we collect
Nothing. There is no account, no server that holds your recordings, and no analytics. Video, audio, photos and transcripts are written to this device and stay there until you move them.
Every call this app can make
This list is generated from the same table the build checks against, so it cannot drift from what ships.
Check it yourself
Turn on airplane mode and use the app normally — capture, transcribe, search, export. Everything works. Then tap below: the app watches its own network layer and reports anything that tries to leave.
Recording consent
Recording law is yours to follow, but it should not be invisible. Many places (most of the United States, England and Wales, and others) allow a recording when one party consents — you count. Others require everyone to agree: in the US that includes California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington and several more; in the EU, consent rules vary by country and workplace recordings are treated more strictly.
At a press conference or public event, consent is usually implied. In a private interview, say you are recording and capture the answer — the first line of your own transcript is the cleanest record of it.
